Sharing Our Faith Together

The Kingdom is my business

by Rev Greg Obong-Oshotse 8 May 2020

Read Joshua 1:1-18

“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” Joshua 1:8

William Carey (1761-1834), from Northamptonshire, is remembered today as the father of modern missions. While preparing to go to India, he spent so much time preaching and teaching that his trade as a cobbler suffered. A friend scolded him for neglecting his business. Carey replied, “Neglecting my business? My business is to extend the Kingdom of God. I only cobble shoes to pay the expenses.” Carey demonstrates the priority of the Kingdom over earthly pursuits, as well as the precedence of obedience over works.

Joshua is about to lead God’s people into a series of battles for the Promised land. His success is hinged on his obedience because it is God who determines the victory. This is a primary lesson taught throughout the Scriptures. We share in the same guarantee given to Joshua: if we dig deep into the Word (meditate on it day and night) to know it and then to obey it,we will find “good success,” as shall be determined by the Lord.

Prayer
